Whether you’d like a meaningful way to enhance the lives of those in need this holiday season, or want to help a worthy cause that provides vital services throughout the year, The Police Credit Union supports a number of exciting events and powerful programs to get you inspired! Each year, we make it a priority to contribute to deserving law enforcement organizations and nonprofits making a positive impact in the communities our members work so hard to protect. We’re taking this opportunity to feature some of these efforts, and should the spirit move you, highlighting some rewarding ways you can team up with The Police Credit Union toward these goals:

Our members keep our toy drive barrels overflowing! Throughout the years, we’ve been a proud sponsor of law enforcement-affiliated holiday drives and the tradition continued in 2019. We extend a huge thank you to all of our generous members that have donated a toy, book or school supplies at our Irving, San Bruno or San Mateo Branches. Of course, we also express our sincere gratitude to the following organizations for coordinating these successful campaigns to make the holidays brighter for families in need!

Help make a life-changing wish a reality for local children: Congratulations to our staff at The Police Credit Union who took part in “Brave the Bay,” on December 7, 2019! Presented by the San Francisco Police Department, this exhilarating, team-based fundraiser features three athletic challenges: the 5k Walk for Wishes, Plunge for Wishes and cable car Pull for Wishes. All proceeds from the event benefit Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area in their mission to help fulfill the wishes of children with critical illnesses. Once again, great job to our 2019 team! One great way you can make a difference: donate to Make-A-Wish at http://bit.ly/MakeAWishGreaterBayArea.

Support Cops Care Cancer Foundation’s “Fantasy Flight”: Comprised of local police and civilians, the CCCF hosts an annual holiday-themed carnival for children stricken with cancer or any life-threatening illness or condition. While the kids await Santa’s arrival with special gifts via police helicopter, they have an opportunity to meet with local police officers, police dogs, firefighters and special guests. They’ll also enjoy food, bounce houses, face painters, music, the chance to win prizes and more! Our staff is gearing up to volunteer at this year’s Fantasy Flight, held at Juniper Aspiration Dome in Sunnyvale on December 14, 2019. The event serves 300+ children and their families each year. To make a financial contribution to CCCF, visit the foundation’s site.

We’re proud to support “Operation Motor Santa” in Oakland: The Police Credit Union is pleased to make an annual financial contribution to this celebrated tradition conducted each holiday season by the Oakland Police Department Traffic Division. Dressed as Santa Claus and guided by fellow officers, a police officer from the Rolling Thunder will ride a motorcycle throughout the streets of Oakland on December 19, 2019, handing out gifts to children along the way. A much-anticipated event that always brings holiday cheer, the OPD also reminds us that the experience provides a great opportunity for the department to build relationships with community members.

Further the mission of Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR): With the support of the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police), the Law Enforcement Torch Run has become the largest grassroots public awareness and fundraising movement for Special Olympics. Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement personnel and athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” into opening ceremonies of local competitions, and to state, provincial, regional and world games. The campaign has a number of fundraising platforms, including Plane Pulls, Polar Plunges, Tip-A-Cops and more. In coordination with Chipotle, our staff at The Police Credit Union took part in a day-long fundraiser for LETR again in 2019. Team members sold t-shirts and encouraged diners to donate part of their meal purchase to the cause. Find details on the many ways you can get involved at http://bit.ly/LawEnforcementTorchRun.

Support the works of San Francisco Police Activities League (SFPAL): We were honored to sponsor SFPAL’s toy and food drives again in 2019, but recognize that these are just two of the many ways the organization is helping those in need. For those less familiar with the nonprofit, SFPAL helps build community by organizing youth sports and healthy activities, and is focused on developing personal character and fostering positive relationships among police officers, youth and volunteers. Also, each year, SFPAL coordinates charitable fundraisers and special events such as its Winter Wonderland, Hall of Fame Gala, The Kids’ Games, Golf Tournament and Annual Canned Food Drive. There are a number of ways to make a donation to the organization, which can be found at https://www.sfpal.org/donate.

While the events and causes we’ve included here are by no means a comprehensive list of the many impactful community initiatives and charitable nonprofits that operate with the support of our local law enforcement agencies, they are a reminder of the many important ways that law enforcement professionals are constantly working to make our communities a better place to live and work.

For those of us who are civilians and would like to give back to those that put everything on the line in the interest of public safety and security, this holiday season can be a terrific time to support an organization such as the Bay Area Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (BALEAF) or California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation (CPOMF). And this coming January 9, 2020, you might even consider taking part in a Law Enforcement Appreciation Day near you. Looking for more ideas on ways to make a difference?
