Black Friday and Cyber Monday may have come and gone, but in mid-December, the holiday shopping season is still in full swing. Retailers are offering no shortage of major sales and special offers that amount to superior bargains for astute consumers— whether you still have the bulk of your gift shopping to do, or want to snap up items on your own wish list. We scoped out some of the best values to watch for in 2019, and are showcasing a few of our favorites:
Daily deals from big box retailers: As The Today Show’s “Today Holiday Consumer” points out, major retailers such as Best Buy and Walmart are offering huge savings with one-day markdowns on some of their most popular items, from air fryers and Roomba robotic vacuums to smart speakers and laptops, and much more. With new deals to anticipate every day, you’ll have 24 hours to take advantage of deep discounts on a multitude of items.
Best Buy’s “12 Days of Deals” runs through December 20, 2019, with each day marking a special theme, such as “gifts for the home” (12/17), “stocking stuffers” (12/19) and “gifts for everyone” (12/20). For instance, Best Buy’s December 12 “gifts for foodies” included a KitchenAid Professional 500 Series available for approximately 60 percent off (savings of $300).
At Walmart, Daily Deal Drops are a great place to find substantial price cuts on big ticket items like furniture, appliances and electronics. But the retailer also offers plenty of savings on general merchandise, with discounts such as 50 percent off toys, 60 percent off clothing/accessories, 35 percent off video games, etc. Can’t wait for online delivery but don’t want to brave the crowded stores, parking perils and long lines, or carting kids around with you while holiday shopping? Consider taking advantage of convenient features like store pickup and expanded check-out services such as Check Out With Me.
Major markdowns on jewelry: If you’ve had an eye on a particular piece of jewelry and you didn’t happen to scoop it up in a Black Friday sale, December may be the right time to make your move. According to comparison shopping site DealNews, you’re more likely to find a few more sales on jewelry in December than in November. As contributing author Elizabeth Harper tells us, many of these markdowns are on modestly-priced items that make good stocking stuffers or smaller gifts, but sales on higher-end items are available as well. A few brands she plugs for their past holiday sales: Alex and Ani, Helzberg Diamonds and Larson Jewelers. For suggestions, check out the site’s current Staff Picks.
Gift card bonanzas:
Before you dismiss a gift card as impersonal, keep in mind that they tend to be the gift that most people really want to receive during the holidays. In “Holiday Shopping Advice and the Best Holiday Deals 2019
” the video game and entertainment website IGN makes a great case for them. They are easy to buy, wrap and conceal. Plus, they come in a variety of festive styles, and make wonderful stocking stuffers. You can also purchase digital gifts cards instantly, and at the last minute, and personalize them however you want.
According to DealNews, December is an exceptionally good time to buy gift cards for less than their face value. But your best bet may be to get them before Christmas, as 75 percent of gift card sales occurred before December 25 in 2018. Real Simple also reveals that online gift card marketplaces like CardCash and Raise.com offer discounts of up to 50 percent. As a spokeswoman for Slickdeals told the magazine, “Some gift cards to popular merchants may be a lesser savings, but every dollar counts, especially if you’re making a larger purchase.” Just be sure that you know exactly how these discount sites work. For instance, CardCash guarantees gift cards for a limited period of 45 days. To avoid any potential pitfalls with discounted gift cards, check out “How to Save on ANYTHING With Gift Cards.”
If you’ve been planning to do some genealogical exploration using DNA testing, the holiday season may be the right time to invest in an at-home kit. Until December 31, 2019, AncestryDNA
has marked down their AncestryDNA® kit to $59 (original price $99) and AncestryHealthCore™ kit to $99 (original price $149). Gravity Blankets: Most of us will appreciate anything that contributes to a rejuvenating night’s sleep, and the Gravity Blanket may well be on the gift radar of a loved one this year. Featured in Business Insider, research suggests weighted blankets like these lower stress hormones and improve the production of feel-good hormones/neurotransmitters we need for restorative sleep. In a roundup of holiday deals, USA Today praised the Gravity Blanket as the best weighted blanket on the market, noting that it is extra soft, machine washable and not too heavy. Through December 31, 2019, you can get 25 percent off a Gravity Blanket while supplies last with the code “HOLIDAY2019” at checkout.
