Back in 2012, an organization known as The Whole Truth Project announced “Thank a Police Officer Day” to recognize the sacrifices and difficult work that police officers do every day to protect our communities and keep the peace. As a Chicago-based attorney that represented law enforcement, the organization’s founder was well familiar with the extent to which the public often took the service of police officers for granted. He was therefore inspired to help redress this tendency by launching a demonstration of gratitude and support for those who put everything on the line for the safety of all.
Distinct from both Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9 and Police Week in May, “Thank a Police Officer Day” is now held nationally on the third Saturday of September. In honor of this day, we’re providing some essential tips on how to make the most of the special deals and discounts available to law enforcement and first responders.
Access exclusive savings with a membership to GovX
A free account with this online retail channel gives first responders and law enforcement access to a wealth of deep discounts on tactical gear, outdoor equipment and athletic clothing. In these categories alone, popular merchandise includes such names as 5.11 Tactical, Oakley, Under Armour, Maui Jim, Ray-Ban, Vortex Optics and the North Face. But the deals don’t stop there. As Police1 explains, GovX provides discounts of 65% off of more than 400 retail brands and major league sports and entertainment, as well as special offers on travel, hotels, rental cars and theme parks. Register on ID verification platforms such as ID.me, SheerID and VerifyPass
Online eligibility verification companies have made it simple and easy for individuals who belong to certain professional groups to take advantage of valuable discounts on a wide selection of merchandise and services. Three of the most popular of these sites for law enforcement and first responders include ID.me, SheerID and VerifyPass. These networks provide a virtual gold mine of special offerings – allowing you to search by brand or category such as clothing and accessories, health and beauty, sports and outdoors, travel and entertainment, lifestyle, tech and office, home, auto, pets and more.
A quick perusal of ID.me under the category “Travel” revealed up to 30 percent off of the lowest hotel rate from Caesars Entertainment at more than 35 locations, along with scores of discounts from brands such as Marriott Bonvoy, Getaway, Priceline, IHG Hotels & Resorts, and Disneyland Resort. Among the many bargains under “Electronics” was an offer for up to 40% off plus free shipping from HP, along with numerous options for phone plans tailored to law enforcement and first responders. Another favorite was a 20% discount off of select home security products from Ring, which can be found on VerifyPass.
Take advantage of the hero deals when dining out
In addition to what may be available at some of your local restaurants, many national restaurants and food service providers offer discounts to law enforcement and first responders with a valid work ID or service badge. Just a few of these include Outback Steakhouse (10% off), Texas de Brazil (15% off), El Pollo Loco (15% off at participating locations), and Krispy Kreme (50% off of the full retail price of all doughnuts up to 4 dozen for those in uniform, 10% for those not in uniform upon presentation of valid ID). Find more options on restaurant and food deals at Badge Discounts — but be aware that exclusions may apply, and that some offers vary by region. Of course, policies also change, so it’s best to check ahead of time to ensure that a specific discount will apply.
In many cases, restaurant discounts are available for dine-in only, not online ordering, but some online deals can be accessed via an identity verification service like ID.me. For instance, for those seeking a time-saving and convenient way to prepare meals at home, Home Chef offers 50% off for the first order and 10% off subsequent orders through ID.me. Money Crashers also notes that Atkins uses SheerID to confirm eligibility for their 15% discount on protein bars and shakes for first responders.
